Dalem Sasono Mulyo is a building located within the Kasunanan Surakarta Palace complex. It was built in 1811 during the reign of ISKS Paku Buwono IV (1788–1820). The architecture of the building reflects both Javanese and colonial styles, visible in its pendapa (open pavilion), topengan (decorative elements), pringgitan dalem ageng, and the lojen-style building on the right side of the pendapa, which was constructed during the reign of Paku Buwono X.
The pendapa features 4 Saka Guru (main pillars) supporting the structure, with 24 saka pengarak (supporting pillars) under the roof, 12 saka supporting the main roof, and 20 saka supporting the panitih roof. Originally, the building was called Dalem Ngabean because it was constructed as the residence for Pangeran Hangabei, the son of Paku Buwono IV, who later became Paku Buwono VIII (1858–1861).
The building includes several areas: pendapa, pringgitan, dalem ageng, senthong kiwa, senthong tengan, pawon, sumur, and gandhok. The last resident was Pangeran Hangabei, the son of ISKS Paku Buwono X, who became Paku Buwono XI (1939–1945). He married GKR Bendara (daughter of Paku Buwono VIII) and had a son named BRM Suryo Guritno, who later became ISKS Paku Buwono XII (1945–2004).
From December 1, 1965, to May 30, 1967, Sasono Mulyo served as a camp to hold political prisoners. Afterward, from 1971, the building returned to its original purpose, supporting palace activities related to Javanese culture. It also became the center for Indonesian Karawitan Arts Academy and Taman Budaya Surakarta from 1975 to 1980. From 1980 to 2000, it was used for cultural events, including wedding ceremonies, wayang kulit performances, cultural discussions, and death rituals.
