Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat Tradition in Cooking a Traditional Food called Lemper for Dish in Kirab Malam 1 Sura

In the Javanese calendar, there exists a month named Sura or Suro, it is the first month in the Javanese calendar. For people who still firmly hold Javanese tradition, Sura is a sacred night. Being the epicenter of Javanese tradition, Kraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat held an annual event every Sura called Kirab Malam 1 Sura Karaton Kasunanan Hadiningrat.

The Kirab Malam 1 Sura is a tradition of reflection, for Javanese people to be better than they were before. There are various traditions held by Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat following up to Malam 1 Sura, one of which is cooking a traditional food called Lemper.

Lemper is a snack made with glutinous rice with seasoned ground meat as a filling. The ground meat will then be rolled with the glutinous rice, covered with banana leaves, and then steamed.

This year, the next generation of Solo’s faces of tourism, the Putra Putri Solo 2022 Finalists get a firsthand experience of making the classic Lemper with the guidance of Prameswari Dalem GKR Pakoe Boewono.
